1974 Snowmobile Handbook by Popular Science
Everest 440 SM; that's what Bombardier calls its newest entrant in the hot TNT line. The snowmobiles 437cc Rotax engine pushing it to a healthy 52-mph top speed in the soft snow at our test site. As you might expect, handling is excellent and the ride is comfortable.
Making quick, tight turns, charging up a steep slope covered with deep virgin powder, or winding on an open stretch-they're all a piece of cake with this sled. One big reason is the Everest's track, a new width-16 1/2 inches.
There's more to the 440SM than a good ride. The sturdy lightweight aluminum frame is reinforced with steel cross members. Slide suspension adjustment is extremely easy. The disk brake is self adjusting and good.
