December, 1984 - V-Max Mods Proving Popular. Before going into production with The 1985 V-Max, Yamaha engineers strongly considered and almost won approval for factory modifications that reportedly add 3-5 percent more horsepower.
Although the mods, which included some porting changes, were not done at the factory. Yamaha dealers were authorized to do the modifications for performance minded customers.
According to reports from the field, as many as half of all new V-Max buyers were having the mod work done before delivery.
