PITTSBURG, N.H. — A Massachusetts man is dead after his snowmobile went airborne and collided with a large tree.
New Hampshire officials said crews responded to a report of snowmobile crash at Boundary Pond in Pittsburg.
Crews found a group of riders and the driver involved in the crash who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the driver, identified as Stephen Nava, 21, of Kingston, was traveling at a high rate of speed across the frozen surface of Boundary Pond when the snowmobile hit an earthen portion of the dam.
The snowmobile became airborne and then collided with a large tree.
Nava was wearing a full-faced helmet and shield at the time of the collision, but it came off upon impact.
Officials said it appears failure to adjust operation was the primary factor in the crash and believe neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the incident.
The snowmobile will undergo a mechanical inspection.
